Visionary Scientist

Shaping the scientific frontier of cybersecurity and trustworthy AI.

Michael Backes is an internationally renowned researcher and one of the leading scientific authorities in cybersecurity, privacy and trustworthy artificial intelligence. For more than two decades, his research has helped shape these fields internationally — from the foundations of cryptographic security and privacy to machine-learning security and, most recently, the trustworthiness of generative AI and large language models.

His work has never been confined to academic research alone. Several technologies and systems emerging from his research have attracted widespread attention and found substantial real-world adoption. From privacy and mobile security to distributed machine learning and AI security, his work has repeatedly translated fundamental scientific ideas into technologies with practical relevance far beyond the research community.

What distinguishes his scientific career, however, is not simply the volume of research or the number of distinctions. It is the repeated ability to recognize important scientific problems early and move into fields before their broader significance became obvious.

Across these different scientific waves, the underlying ambition has remained constant:

Identify the important problem early.Understand it at a fundamental level.Build the research required to move the field forward.

Three scientific waves

01

Formal Verification Meets Cryptography

Two communities that had grown up separately, with no shared language. The contribution was not a result inside one of them — it was the bridge.

Early in his career, Backes made seminal contributions to one of the longstanding challenges of security research: connecting formal verification with modern cryptography. His work helped bridge two previously largely separate scientific communities and contributed to what became a major international research direction.

02

Privacy Before It Was a Crisis

Privacy became one of the defining challenges of the digital economy years later. The research that mattered had to exist before the question was widely asked.

He subsequently pioneered research in privacy-enhancing technologies long before privacy became one of the defining challenges of the digital economy. His work ranged from enterprise privacy architectures and provably privacy-preserving protocols to new approaches for protecting personal information on mobile devices and highly sensitive systems.

03

Security, Privacy and AI

The same move a third time: entering a field while its consequences were still being argued about rather than measured.

As machine learning emerged as a transformative technology, his research moved increasingly toward the intersection of security, privacy and AI. He contributed early work on adversarial machine learning, attacks on the privacy of machine-learning systems and privacy-preserving distributed learning.
